I've been keeping an eye out for a little while for some alternative to Facebook, especially with the increased amount of control being exerted over the experience. Some months ago I created a Mastodon account but found myself less interested in microblogging. Last week I installed Diaspora* and found it limited; from there I installed Hubzilla which is where I am currently.
Starting from an empty server is unlikely to be the optimal starting point for any of the services in the "Free Network" no matter how much federation logic they contain. I don't know whether I will stay here or move to a different technology, I don't know if I will get bored of this place and let it go fallow. It does feel like something good to explore though, even if it is a tiny seed that will take years to grow.
